Soundproofing New York

We work across New York City and the surrounding area, alongside our NJ service area, mostly in apartments, co-ops, offices and studios. The building types differ from New Jersey, and so do the noise paths, which is why the approach here starts with the structure rather than the surface.

What We Are Called For

Common New York noise problems

Footsteps through concrete slabs

Most New York apartment buildings are concrete framed. Concrete carries impact noise efficiently, so footsteps and furniture movement arrive with very little loss. The effective treatment is an isolated ceiling below, or a resilient layer under the floor above where access allows.

Party wall noise in pre war buildings

Older buildings often have masonry party walls with joists pocketed directly into them. Sound moves through the masonry and through the framing at the same time, so treating only the wall surface rarely gives the expected result.

Street, subway and mechanical noise

Street noise enters through windows. Subway and mechanical noise travels through the structure. These are different problems and they need different solutions, which is the most common reason previous attempts have failed.

Working with buildings

Interior alteration in most New York buildings requires an approved filing. We prepare the scope of work, provide insurance certificates and schedule deliveries around service elevator hours so the project passes management review without delay.

Frequently Asked

Soundproofing in New York

View All FAQs →
Do you work in New York City apartments? +
Yes. Most of our New York work is in apartments and co-ops where footsteps from above or noise through a party wall is the problem. Buildings usually require an alteration filing, and we provide the scope and insurance documentation boards ask for.
Can you soundproof against subway and street noise? +
Subway noise is structure borne and needs decoupling rather than mass alone. Street noise enters mainly through windows, so glazing upgrades and perimeter sealing carry most of the improvement.
Do co-op and condo boards need to approve the work? +
In most New York buildings, yes. We supply the scope of work, insurance certificates and schedule that management typically requires before permitting interior alteration.
